Shedding “New Light” on Recycling: Innovative Eco-Friendly Fixtures from Graypants

The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City each May, has become the premier North American showcase for modern design. It is the place to see new products, discover emerging trends, and learn about the latest “green” initiatives and innovations. It is also the place to meet the bright new stars in contemporary design, like Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, co-founders of Graypants, a Seattle-based architecture and design firm.

Trained as architects, Seth and Jonathan realized their true passion for design when they began re-imagining salvaged materials-lumber, paper, and cardboard-into purposeful, innovative new products. What began as scavenger hunts for materials has turned into a successful business where reuse is the creative driving force and technology and handcraft are the tools for implementation.

Scraplights, the product for which the company is best known, are light fixtures made from recycled corrugated boxes. The cardboard is die-cut into concentric circles and then hand layered and glued, one on top of the other. The process takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours for each shade, but the transformation from scrap into semi-transparent globes, pendants, and drum-shaped light fixtures is the true embodiment of purposeful re-invention. When the shade is complete, it is wired for either a ceiling mount or plug installation.

At this year's ICFF, Graypants introduced the Slice Cafe Chair. True to the company's commitment for using salvage materials and reducing waste, three Slice chairs can be cut from one 4' x 8' piece of salvaged plywood. The only waste… sawdust.
